You must have heard about Bill Mollison and David Holmgren!
The Australian Bruce Charles, also known as Bill Mollison, lived from 1928 to 2016. Researcher, author, scientist, teacher, and biologist, Bill Mollison is famous for having co-developed and promoted with David Holmgren the theory and practice of permaculture.
Permaculture, as initially co-developed by Bill Mollison, is a contraction of permanent agriculture. Quickly, Mollison realized it was a system for permanent culture rather than agriculture. Indeed, to survive, a culture needs a productive landscape, a healthy ecology, and a circular economy.
Bill Mollison wrote several books (now used in permaculture courses) explaining, in detail, how to design a productive cultural ecosystem with the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.
The design permaculture principles he uses are:
- Relative location
- Each element performs many functions
- Each function is supported by many elements
- Efficient energy planning
- Biological resources use
- Leverage of biodiversity
